Wonderful stuff on Hurstwood Reservoir. You combine the lyrical eg Pic 4 with the more angular and fierce (eg Pic 10).
For one who loves Hurstwood Reservoir in all its guises it it really appreciated.
My nephew and his loved one were married in the chapel on 01 November 2008 and perhaps Pic 4 inspired:
"Reflections are
one offering of a reservoir."

HEY THOSE ARE REALLY BEAUTIFUL PICTURES OF CLOWBRIDGE.
BACK IN THE TWENTIES MY MOTHER USED TO VISIT ONE OF THE TENANTS OF THOSE HOUSES. WHEN WE STAYED OVERNIGHT I WAS SCARED TO DEATH BY THE STORIES THE OLD LADY TOLD OF HER DEAD HUSBAND MAKING NOCTURNAL VISITS TO HER. HE WAS KILLED BY A BUS OUTSIDE HER FRONT DOOR.
WHAT MEMORIES PICTURES CAN EVOKE. THEY REALLY ARE BEAUTIFUL

What a suprise.... I can remember drawing that arch when I was around 14 years old, a keen cyclist and sketcher, infact the arch became a logo of a sculpturing company I used to have some near twenty years ago. If my memory serves me right there is a date stone above the doorway dating to 16##, it must have been a bleak lifestyle living there then

Hi Leon.
Like the Nelson funfair ones the best. They remind me of the shots I used to take whilst at Art college. But in those days all I had was a Yashica (not SLR) and took b&w shots - had to develop them myself too.
Do you retouch them with Photoshop or anything?
Keep it up.
suzanne - 23/11/2006
these are some amazing shots. my camera is incabable of decent picture

Now 86, and writing my family history, I'm, remembering those days in the 30s when I would spend holidays with my grandfather W W Moulds of St Helens. First in what must have been perhaps a fishermans shack at Stony Gap, and later in what must have been an adjacent farmhouse which he later acquired. I seem to remember the address was 'Far Arnside'
My main memory of the farmhouse is that it had a 'two seater' outside 'convenience' and
that, unlike my home in Southport, had no gas or electricity. Lighting was by oil lamps or candles and cooking was achieved by the use of Primus stoves.
Fresh water was gained from a spring, down on the beach, covered by the sea at high tide
but giving fresh clear water at low tide.
The water was carried up a path to the higher ground where the 'shack' and farmhouse were.
This was achieved by the use of two buckets and a 'hoop' of tree branch around the body which when grasped withe the bucket handles kept them from banging against the carrier's legs.
The lane down to my grandfather's 'place' was off to the left of the road from Silverdale to Arnside, just beyond what I seem to remember was called 'The Dip' on the approach to which a small boy was able to read a sign which read:
EASE ALL HORSES ON THESE HILLS, PASSENGERS PLEASE WALK.
We,of course, were in a motor car in which we had driven from Southport via Preston and Carnforth.
The sign is now, no doubt, long gone, but if a picture of it does exist I would dearly love to see it again
We have lived in Perth, Western Australia since migrating here in 1957 and my present aim
is to try and leave, for my children, grandchildren and great-children, some of my memories of the 'Old Country'
I can be contacted by snail-mail at
31, Cadoux Loop
HOCKING, 6065
Western Australia.
Or by fax on (08) 9306 3975
Or by email on willimik@bigpond.net.au
P,S,
Do they still race 'sand yachts' on the beach at Silverdale?

Hi Leon, looking at your pictures of the Burnley area (and the subject matter), I'm quite suprised we haven't bumped into each other! Nice site and some cracking images, give me a shout if you want to check some of my online photos of Burnley out, cheers.
Karen - 01/05/2006
It's great to be asked to look at scenes and objects from a different point of view. Stills of images we often glimpse at but don't fix in the memory are thought provoking. Close ups of signage were particulary good - I thoroughly enjoyed looking at your photos but am a little envious of your locations!
paul millar - 21/04/2006
great pics, vivid color, great topics
George Marks - 14/04/2006

Good composition used throughout. Unfortunately photographs show why Morecambe ha become much maligned in recent years. No other seaside resort in the country can boast such a visat from the promenade. Well done

Superb photography, Leon. Particulary like the gritty shots around the arches and Central Station. Do you have any more railway scenes in Burnley you would like to display? I grew up in Burnley and was fascinated by the railway as a kid, although I don't suppose there is much of the railway left now.
Keep up the good work.
